According to The Review, it was 150 years ago, this July, when Salineville played host to some 23,000 Union soldiers, and another 500 Confederate soldiers captured during what would become known as Morgan’s Raid.
The infamous raid has since become part of local lore and is still talked about “as though it happened yesterday” as John H. Barnet of the Carroll County Historical Society put it.
“Salineville played a big part in this” he said.
At Monday Village Council meeting, Barnet outlined events planned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Morgan’s Raid. The events will take place on what was the last two days of Morgan’s Raid, July 27-28, around Salineville and across Columbiana, Carroll and Jefferson counties. Historical societies in these three counties will host a drive-it-yourself tour of Morgan’s route through Ohio. The tour will include seven stops along Morgan’s route starting in Wintersville and ending in Wellsville, where Morgan was taken after being captured near West Point. Barnet told council the driving tour will send motorists down state Route 164, bringing them into the village.
